The other alternative is vaporetto operated by ACTV, which is water-bus that costs 6 Euros one way. There is a possibility that the vaporetto may not halt at your hotel. Another way to reach San Marco is by walking, which may take an hour, no matter what means of transport you take – bus, train, ferry or car.

In case, you do not want to go through the hurdle of public transportation, then you can stay near Santa Lucia train station or Piazzale Roma. The flip side is you will have to walk anywhere between 45 to 55 minutes to reach popular sights.

You can also choose to stay in other neighborhoods in Venice like Castello, Santa Croce, Cannaregio and Dorsoduro.

Ideally, avoid staying at Venice Mestre, this is the central or mainland area of Venice City. The issue is that reaching to the main sights of Venice from here, is quite time consuming.

You can also stay at Lido, this is the island that divides the lagoon from the sea; it is a few stops from San Marco by a vaporetto.

For more seclusion and peace away from brimming crowds, you can stay in Cannaregio. It is also close the railway station and offers scenic views. You will also find Jewish Ghetto here. The area along the Grand Canal from the railway station to the Rialto Bridge is full of tourists, but the rest of Cannaregio is quite peaceful.

The island of Giudecca is the destination for some of the top-end luxurious hotels in Venice. You can reach this Giudecca from San Marco, in ten minutes by a ferry ride. It makes for indulgent stay, away from the obtrusive crowd.

2. If you are staying in Venice for a few days, and are going to travel outside the city, you can also choose to stay near Mestre or the airport.
3. Certain BnB locations may not offer Wi-Fi. So, be on the lookout for the one that offers Wi-FI.
4. It is important to have a map of Venice, on hand so that you know the route to your hotel, properly.
5. You can also get the map at tourist offices for a price.
6. Do keep your hotel’s phone number with you, just in case you find yourself losing your way.
7. Choose a room with the view overlooking the waters, and if you want too to avoid too much climbing, look out for the floor you’d stay in.

If you are going to stay in Venice for one night and if you want to see as many sights as possible, then you may need to spend a fair amount of money. You will have to hire a water taxi right from the airport to your hotel, so that you can reach the place fast and see the popular sights along the way. You can also opt to stay near Santa Lucia Railway station. The Airport is located on the main land but is linked to Venice through water taxis and boats. Mestre, or the most populated area of Venice is also o the mainland but there is not much to see, and costs less, relatively speaking. The road ends up at Piazzale Roma, and from thereon, the means of transport is just along the water. The road and the railways move along Mestre. Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train stations are located close to each other.
