Xiamen – Top Tourist Attractions

Xiamen city is located on the coast of southeastern China’s Fujian Province. It has been voted as the cleanest city in the country and is home to numerous tourist attractions. A few Xiamen tourist attractions are mentioned below.

Gulangyu Island

It is the top tourist attraction in Xiamen. Travelers can take a 5-minute ferry ride to reach the car-free gorgeous island. The island is full of eclectic architecture, boutique cafes and luxury hotels, winding roads, pristine beaches, and lush colorful gardens. Such scenic beauty offers the island a sort of Chinese Mediterranean ambiance. Shuzhuang Garden, Piano Garden, and Sunlight Rock are the most popular hotspots in Gulangyu Island.

Wanshi Botanical Garden

It is located on Shi Mountain’s northern slope and built around the Modanyan Reservoir. Also called Xiamen Botanical Garden, the garden is spread across nearly 5 km and is home to 29 different lush gardens with thousands of sub-tropical and tropical plant species. People can get free entry to the garden before 7 am. It is the ideal place for a hike and for nature lovers who desire some tranquility away from the hectic pace of urban life.

Huandao Road

This 31 km long coastal road is one of New China’s top landmarks. The hotspot features bitumen streets, well-laid pavements, jogging tracks, cycling paths, scenic seaside landscape, serene beaches, and varied shops and stores. Tourists can go cycling or revel in adventures such as kite-surfing, etc.

Nanputuo Temple

It is one of the top religious sites in the country and is situated on Xiamen Island’s southeast region. The temple is graced by the Wulao Peaks and the gentle sea and was built during the Tang Dynasty. It consists of five main sections, i.e., Shrine of Sakyamuni Buddha, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Hall of Great Compassion, Hall of Lotto, and the Surta House. The temple is flanked by the Drum and Bell Towers, while the magnificent Universally Shining Tower rises up on the right and the Benevolence Tower on the left. Monks from this temple can often be spotted in the busy streets of downtown.

Zhongshan Road

The pedestrian street is located near the ferry terminal to Gulangyu Island. Adorned by traditional Chinese and Victorian-era architecture, the street is full of street vendors, food centers, shops, modern shopping malls, and entertainment and leisure activities. The best to visit the placed is at night when it is the most vibrant and lit up to the hilt with kaleidoscopic bright lights. Tourists may take an enjoyable walk, go on a shopping spree, shop for trinkets, and delight the taste buds with scrumptious cuisines.

Jimei School Village

Jimei is a small resort town located on the northern banks of Xiamen. It is known for its rich heritage, cultural artifacts, top-notch facilities and great education.  The school village was constructed in early 1990s and is spread across 100,000 sq meters. It has kindergartens, schools, colleges, and universities with thousands of students.

Overseas Chinese Museum 

It is situated on the foothills of Fengchao Hill and is regarded as one of most complete museums depicting overseas Chinese history.The building is spread across 3,000 square meters and features thousands of exhibits, including ancient Chinese agriculture technological accomplishments, inner Mongolian folk artifacts, and Xinjiang unearthed mummies. People can take a bus to Bowuguan Station to reach the museum. There is no entry fee. It is open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm.

Hulishan Fortress 

Located on Xiamen’s southern tip, the magnificent Hulishan Fortress has a distinct Qing and Ming Dynasty military form architecture. The fortress consists of imposing gates, granite walls, the castle, secret tunnel, barracks, sentry platform, tower, trench, and ammunition depot. It is open from 7.30 am to 6 pm and entry fee is about CNY 25.

Haiwan Park

Constructed in 2006, the Haiwan Park is a multi-purpose big comprehensive park that offers dancing, fun, reaction, leisure, partying, entertainment, and tourist activities. It features panoramic beautiful views of the sea, a waterfront railing, and people lined up enjoying sea fishing. The main attraction is the Avenue of the Stars. It has a music water fountain, paved LED lights on the ground, discos, bars, restaurants, cafés, and pubs.

Xiamen University 

It is located in Fujian Province of Xiamen city. Founded in 1921, the university features a one of the most beautiful campuses in the country cuddled by the ‘5 Old Men’ mountains and the sea. A few must visit places at the university include the Humanities Museum and the Luxun memorial Hall.

Hot spring resorts

A winter vacation in Xiamen should include relaxation and time out at hot spring resorts.

  • The two most famous ones are the Trithorn Hotspring Resort and the Riyuegu Hotspring Resort. Both resorts offer international standard 5 star services. Tourists can enjoy varied thermal facilities like naps on thermal stone beds, spa pools, fish pool, massages, beauty and therapeutic sessions, and mineral dip pools.
