In case, you do not want to go through the hurdle of public transportation, then you can stay near Santa Lucia train station or Piazzale Roma. The flip side is you will have to walk anywhere between 45 to 55 minutes to reach popular sights.

Mestre, or the most populated area of Venice is also o the mainland but there is not much to see, and costs less, relatively speaking. The road ends up at Piazzale Roma, and from thereon, the means of transport is just along the water. The road and the railways move along Mestre. Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train stations are located close to each other.
