Berlin Welcome Card – Is it worth it?

The Berlin welcome card is a type of sightseeing card that helps save both money and time. It offers free public transport services in the city and the ticket can also include Potsdam, if you prefer.

The all inclusive ticket allows the opportunity to check out the top best attractions in Berlin, without the need to purchase individual tickets to these sights. You also have the option to choose from nearly 200 Berlin attractions. The Berlin welcome card also includes different tours, including hop-on hop-off bus tour, a city guidebook with a map, and discounts at different restaurants, theaters, and shops. Eventually, you can get savings of up to 50 percent!

How to use the Berlin welcome card?

The Berlin welcome card comes with a travel ticket, which allows free access to public transport services like rail and bus, and the welcome guide. It can be bought online, at sales outlets, or as a voucher or printed ticket that is mailed to you. The guide that is available along with the card is enough for a group of 4 people. Additional visitors will require another guide.

The guide and the Berlin welcome care need to be presented to be able to get the associated rebates and discounts at different attractions and shops, etc. The Berlin welcome card which includes Museum Island tour comes with 1-day free entry to all the museums (exclusive of special exhibitions) located on the Museum Island, during the validity period of the card.

The main advantage of the Berlin welcome card is the fact that unlike other cards, like the Berlin day ticket, the former offers a lot of flexibility. After printed tickets are validated by transport companies at specific machines, they stay valid for the purchased period of 48 hours, 72 hours, or 4, 5, or 6 days. Online tickets need not be validated before they are used. The validity on 4, 5, and 6 day Berlin welcome cards expires at 12 AM on the last day.

Different types of Berlin welcome card

The city of Berlin is divided into 3 different A, B, and C fare zones. Visitors require the correct travel ticket to be able to use the public transport services on each of these zones. Zone A is made of Berlin inner city till the S-Bahn Ring; Zone B include outside of S-Bahn Ring till the limits of the city; and Zone C consists if the area around the city, which includes the Sachsenhausen Memorial Site, Potsdam town, and Schönefeld Airportof Berlin.

Two different kinds of Berlin welcome card tickets are available for purchase, i.e., type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 is available as a discount card which can be available at over 200 partners. It is further subdivided into 3 types:

  • Berlin type 1 card, which is limited to Berlin AB zone and valid only for 1 adult.
  • Berlin + Potsdam type 1 card, which covers Berlin ABC zone and comes with validity for 1 adult and 3 children aged between 6 and 14 years.
  • Berlin Welcome Card Museum Island type 1 card, which includes Berlin + Potsdam zone ABC or Berlin AB tariff zone and comes with validity for 1 adult along with free access to different museums located at Berlin’s Museum Island. It allows for free travel of children younger than 14 years old.

Type 2 Berlin Welcome card is available as all-inclusive carefree pass with free entry to over 30 attractions. It is valid for 1 adult and 3 children under 14 years of age and covers Berlin ABC travel zone. It also allows unrestricted use of public transport for travel to Sachsenhausen or Potsdam.

It is important to note that the Berlin welcome card which covers ABC zone is needed for travel to and fro from the Schönefeld Airport. It is not possible to get an extension for C zone on a Berlin welcome card with access only to AB zone.

  • Validity: 48 hours – Cost: 21.90 Euros
  • Validity: 72 hours – Cost: 29.90 Euros
  • Validity: 4 days – Cost: 35.50 Euros
  • Validity: 5 days – Cost: 41.00 Euros
  • Validity: 6 days – Cost: 46.00 Euros

Travel luggage, pushchairs, and trams can be carried for free on the Berlin Welcome card. Visitors will need to purchase a reduced price ticket for each dog. A bicycle ticket has to be bought if you are travelling with a bicycle. There are no reductions in prices for group travelers.

How to purchase Berlin welcome card?

  • The Berlin welcome card can be purchased over the web and printed at home. It can be directly used when you arrive in the city.
  • It can be ordered as a shipping ticket which is mailed to your home. The shipping ticket comes with a pocket-sized convenient city guide and tour plan.
  • It can be bought online as a ticket voucher and later exchanged for a valid ticket at redemption or selling points.
