- Sony A6000
Despite being launched back in 2014, the A6000 from Sony continues to be a favorite with the professionals as an entry-level mirrorless camera as it offers the best in-class performance and is great value for money.
Despite launching the A6300 and the A6500, Sony has not yet discontinued the A6000, which is good news for us consumers. For under $600, the A6000 offers an APS-C sized 24-megapixel sensor, a 360-shot battery life, 11fps burst shot, an electronic viewfinder, a range of Sony lenses to choose from, a 16-50mm kit lens and Wi-Fi. Sony also offers a range of lenses bundled together, if you are looking for a great deal.
The downsides of the A6000 include the lack of a touch screen display, 1080p resolution as opposed to 4k, and in-body image stabilization. The Menu is also a tad difficult to get used to. However, the Sony A6000 is the best mirrorless camera to purchase on a budget of $600.
- Fujifilm X-A5
Fujifilm has carved a reputation among the enthusiasts for building some of the best mirrorless cameras, and the X-A5 does not disappoint. Renowned for their sharpness, Fujifilm cameras are great for low-light imaging.
The X-A5 is an entry-level mirrorless camera packed with a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sized sensor, a 450-shot battery life, a tilted selfie-friendly touch screen and an image stabilized 15-50mm zoom lens.
The X-A5 is capable of burst shooting at 6fps and 4k videos at 15fps, which is not that impressive. The camera also misses out on a viewfinder and uses the Fuji X-Mount system, which limits the choice of lens. The X-A5, however, features Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and is priced at $600.
- Panasonic Lumix GX9
The Lumix GX9 from Panasonic steps up the price game, as it is a professional-focused MFT mirrorless camera. The camera features a 20.3-megapixel MFT sensor, in-body 5-axis image stabilization, 12-60mm image stabilized lens, a tilted touchscreen and an electronic viewfinder.
It also supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, 4k video resolution, 9fps burst speeds and has access to a wide range of lenses apart from the bundle pack. With all the additional features in place, users will definitely miss the weatherproofing, which was present in its predecessor, the GX8.
The battery life is however limited to 260 shots. The camera is priced at $900 for the body and kit lens.
- Canon EOS M100
The best entry-level mirrorless camera available for $400, the EOS M100 from Canon gets a 15-45mm lens, 24.2-megapixel APS-C sized sensor, 6.1fps burst shots, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity along with a relatively quick autofocus.
Canon offers a number of lenses through their EF-M range along with an adaptor which increases compatibility. The camera is also quite lightweight, measuring around 10.7 ounces for the body only while the battery lasts for 295 shots on a single charge.
The camera is plagued by the lack of image stabilization, 4k video recording, and the absence of a viewfinder. You could use the tilted screen for better clarity, but that is a pain to use on clear sunny days. However, considering the price point of the M100, it is not all that bad.
- Panasonic Lumix GX800/GX850
The Panasonic GX 850, also called the GX 800 in certain parts around the world, is one of many micro four-thirds camera from Panasonic, although, this one sits near the bottom of the price range.
Despite its modest price tag this camera is no slouch. It is great for videographers as it can effortlessly shoot 4k videos. Panasonic is known for manufacturing some of the best mirrorless video cameras and the GX 800/850 is no exception.
This camera can take 10fps burst shots and has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity along with a tilting touchscreen. The battery lasts for around 210 shots per charge and the camera lacks on-body image stabilization.
The 12-32mm kit lens features image stabilization, although, a viewfinder is missing. The best part about this camera is the wide array of lenses that it supports. The Lumix 800/850 is available for $550.
- Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III
The OM-D E-M10 Mark III is Olympus’s contender in the four thirds camera segment, featuring a 16-megapixel lens, in-body image stabilization, a tilting touchscreen, electronic viewfinder, 8.6fps shoots, 4k video support and a 330-shot battery life.
Olympus sells a 14-42mm kit lens along with the body for $600, although, you can pick up the body only at a small discount. A wide range of MFT lenses are also compatible with the E-M10 Mark III, which is unheard of in this segment.
- Fujifilm X-T20
The X-T20 is Fujifilm’s bridge between hobbyist and professional camera equipment, and it offers quite a lot for its price. The camera features a 24.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, an electronic viewfinder, tilting touchscreen, 4k video support and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The image quality of the X-T20 is commendable as it uses Fuji’s advanced X-Trans III sensor found on their more expensive cameras. The images captured on the X-T20 are known for their sharpness and dynamic range.
The camera appeals to the retro fanatics as its styling includes a lot of knobs and buttons for easy adjustments on the fly. The battery lasts for around 350 shots per charge and the camera shoots up to 14fps. The only downside is the lack of weatherproofing.
- Sony Alpha A7 III
Sony Alpha A7 III is a more advanced form of its predecessor, and offers silent shooting, an improved 610 shot battery life with the electronic viewfinder or 710 shot with the touchscreen, which is double that on the A7 II.
Other notable features include excellent low-light performance, a 24.2-megapixel full frame sensor, a weatherproof body, 10fps burst shooting and a tilted touchscreen. Priced at $2000, there is very little that this camera misses.
