Dyrholaey Beach – Black Sand Beach with Stunning All-round Views

Despite its diminutive size, Dyrholaey has become a popular landmark on a dark Iceland beach.

There are arches and vantage points all around this vast area.

As a result of its elevation, Dyrholaey offers one of Iceland’s best views of black beaches.

Dyrholaey is only a short distance away from Reynesfjara in Iceland’s north.

Because the beaches in Iceland are so close together, you may easily visit two of them on a single trip. Dyrholaey, a black sand beach in Iceland, is also home to puffins during the breeding season.  Keep a watch out for these adorable birds if you visit throughout the spring and summer!

This beach, Dyrholaey, is located west of Reynisdrangar, Iceland’s largest glacier. Known as “Door Hill Island,” Dyrhólaey soars to a height of roughly 120 metres.

As such, if you’re not afraid of heights and have a natural talent for photographing nature, this is the ideal location. From the summit of Dyrhólaey, you can see an unusually shaped lighthouse.

This lighthouse is shaped like a castle and features a doorway, making it a rare sight. You can visit Solheimasandur, Reynisfjara, and Dyrholaey all in one trip if you stay near Vik.

It is forbidden to drive on Iceland’s beaches. At the base of Dyrholaey, there are several little parking lots where you can leave your car and walk down to the black sand beach. Head down the road and then turn right up the steep and unkempt dirt road if you’d like to see Dyrholaey’s most popular viewpoint.  Plan to carry a wide-angle and a telephoto lens at the very least for your visit to the Dyrhólaey area.

How to get to Dyrhólaey Beach

Dyrhólaey is a two-and-a-half-hour trip from Reykjavk, but en route you’ll pass through a slew of breathtaking scenery.

When travelling south on Iceland’s main highway, Ring Road 1, you’ll come across Iceland’s Dyrhólaey Lighthouse, also known as Dyrhólaeyjarviti.

The parking area is accessible via a clearly indicated right turn onto road 218.

The lighthouse is just a short walk away from here.
